Two emerging artists Bella Foster and Oscar Clarke join together for their debut show at Ventana.
Wellington artist Bella brings us photography in a fantastic natural colour palette taken predominantly in South Wairarapa. Oscar, based between Wellington and Carterton creates incredible hand inked drawings inspired by organic shapes of nature.
'SILHOUETTES AND SHADOWS'
Perhaps best known for the dynamic style of his prints and woodcuts, Sheyne describes himself as a paper architect who uses his work to create and represent his own cultural context and sense of belonging. His prints and paintings often envisage Polynesia as a futuristic urban utopia. In these re-imaginings, the Samoan fale acts as the symbolic archetype for skyscrapers and apartment housing while the vaka stands in for rocket ships. These works reflect Sheyne’s research into his Samoan heritage and symbolism, his travel wanderlust and his taste for big overseas cities. They also reveal ongoing influences, such as the world of fantasy, comics, and cartoons, which add a sense of immediacy and humour to his subject matter.
'Made in Wairarapa' 9th December - 5th March
Our fourth show in the gallery - and one of our best yet. 10 local artists from throughout the Wairarapa have put together a gorgeous show full of variety and colour. There is something for everyone in this show: recognisable landscapes from the area, woodcut prints, wood carvings, robots, bugs, frogs, gorgeous portraits, oil and wax on board.
A beautiful representation of what our local talent produces and many works have sold in the early days of the show. Looking forward to the months ahead to continue to show the level of quality work coming from this region.
'Biome' 7th November - 4th December
Our second Ventana artist in residence, Woodrow White arrives this month and has brought several clever paintings with him.
Woodrow's paintings are typically known for their subtle commentary on the illusion created in Hollywood with film. Having grown up in Southern California and later schooled in the Bay Area, Woodrow loves looking at the intersection between ego, reality and what really makes people tick.
'Horizons East' 3rd October - 6th November
First Ventana artist in residence, Mark Johnsen arrived in late September and brought his large format prints with him. Our first solo show at Ventana (and nearly every print sold).
"Hello Martinborough" (9th July - 2nd October)
Our inaugural show 'Hello Martinborough' has landed and is open to view 7 days a week, 10am-5pm.
Featuring New Zealand based artists: Frank Auger, Ian Chapman, Susan Cleaver, Crystal Chain Gang, Karyn Roberts, Darren Tautari, Linda Taylor and Emmett Warwood this show is proving very popular with our visitors.
Our newly designed gallery has 30 metres of beautiful naturally lit wall space and went from this:
... to this in just a few short days!
Having been the town bakery in the 1920s this space was built for display; a perfect place for telling stories through art.
